A view to the 2011 Chilean Apple Crop

The apple harvest in Chile is at its peak, depending on the different varieties. Although it is still early to make a thorough analysis of production figures for the 2011 season, the hard freeze experienced in the south-center region of the country, may bring some difficulties, specially for some varieties like Fuji.
Harvest of Galas is over, now the crop is the middle of the Granny and Fuji and other bi-color varieties.
So far, in terms of the overall volume and quality, this year is foreseen to be normal, similar to last year.
On the other hand, a considerable rise in raw material prices for the industry has affected due to the drop in the Chinese and European production and the increased demand and price of apple juice throughout the world. This is particularly noticeable in the juice apples, which have soared by more than 150% compared, to the previous season.
Similarly, apples for puree have also been in greater demand in Chile this season.
Above situation is affecting the dried apples production to some extent, as the high price of apples for peelers is impacting negatively in our costs. Nevertheless, as a company, we are committed to our customers and we expect to reduce this increase as much as possible. Currently, offers are being submitted and contracts being booked for the season.
Surfrut plant started processing apples in early March and should continue until October this year. This includes the whole product range, both in conventional and organics, either for ingredients (dices, flakes, slices, powder, fiber or specialty apple snacks, clusters, chips, puffed apples, flavored apples).
All in all, we will keep maintaining close communication and cooperation with our customers, high level of quality on our service and our products, in order to be able to get along this apple season jointly.
